| Hereford is an ancient cathedral city, established in 676 as the Saxon capital of West Mercia. It is one of only 66 cities in the UK which have been granted city status by Royal Charter, in this case in 1189 by Richard I of England. The cathedral dates from 1079 and contains not only the second largest chained library in the world but the unique 13th century Mappa Mundi. Modern Hereford has a compact but comprehensive shopping area centred around High Town. a pedestrianised area with outdoor cafes, the Butter Market (1860) and the Old House (1621). Hereford Cattle Society trepresents the 200 year old white-faced Hereford breed, world famous from countless Hollywood cowby movies. Hereford is also the base of HP Bulmer, the world's largest cider maker and, until a few years ago, the SAS (now relocated a few miles to Credenhill). | ||||||||||||||
