Herefordshire is one of the Marches shires, separated from Wales by Offa's Dyke which was constructed around 785 AD by the King of Mercia. The county is known throughout the world for its eponymous cattle with their distinctive white faces and red coats.....instantly recognisable from countless Hollywood cowboy films. The 13th century Mappa Mundi in Hereford Cathedral is a unique treasure showing how both the geographical and spiritual world was viewed by mediaeval scholars. Herefordshire is also renowned for its black & white architecture, the Golden Valley, Hay festival, castles, cider, strawberries & hops.....more | ||||||||||||||||

a bit more about herefordshire |
|||||||||||||||||
| Herefordshire is, at its heart, farming country and the rich red soil - reflected in the coats of the world famous Hereford cattle – cider orchards, hop vines, strawberry fields, vineyards and award winning wines, scrumpy, organic meats, fruit, vegetables, awesome sausages all demonstrate Herefordshire’s abundant natural bounty. | |||||||||||||||||
| Herefordshire is not a standard tourist honeypot or chocolate-box calendar pin-up or indeed chic barbour clad land rover faux-country…....it is the real thing, the real English countryside. A richly rural patchwork quilt of verdant countryside latticed with sleepy country lanes and meandering rivers and streams. Considered by many to be the birthplace of tourism - attracting 18th century poets and artists such as Wordsworth and JMW Turner – why not follow in their footsteps along the Wye Valley through the majestic gorge at Symonds Yat, under the mediaeval splendour of Goodrich, visiting the historic towns of Ross-on-Wye, Hereford and Hay-on-Wye along your way. Travel along the Golden Valley past a 5,000 year old dolmen, a 12th century abbey, black-and-white and thatched holiday cottages. Stay in farm houses or timber lodges or tucked away and secluded camping and caravan sites. | |||||||||||||||||
| But if you want heritage and chic we’ve got that by the tractor and trailor-load: cathedrals and castles, mediaeval maps and chained libraries, ancient churches, Christmas-card black & white villages, stately homes, Royal demesnes, chic restaurants, gastro pubs, art galleries, museums, individualistic shops. Not as self-consciously promoted as, say, the Cotswolds maybe but stylish nonetheless. Here you may be more tempted to holiday in smart townhouses or contemporary apartments as your vacation rentals of choice. | |||||||||||||||||
| You prefer quaint and rustic? How about Beggars Ash, Bleak Acre, Byton Hand, Canon Pyon, Dancing Green, Druggers End, Eau Withington, Evenjobb, Ewyas Harold, Green Crize, Hole-in-the-Wall, Hope’s Rough, Horseway Head, Lady Halton, Leinthill Starkes, Mansell Gamage, Marston Stannett, Maund Bryan, Moccas, Ocle Pychard, Old Gore, Phocle Green, Picken End, Sellack Boat, Tedstone Wafre, The Lonk, Tumpy Lakes, Turkey Tump and, of course, Wormelow Tump the legendary burial place of King Arthur's son Amhar. | |||||||||||||||||
| Drama? Well – to the east - the dramatic Malvern Hills lie along the Herefordshire/Worcestershire border, separating the low plains of Herefordshire from the glorious Vale of Evesham. This elongated, jagged ridge provided perfect defences for Iron Age man - who built their ancient forts at Worcestershire Beacon and Herefordshire Beacon - and its soaring grandeur inspired the music of Sir Edward Elgar. Thereafter there is, apparently, nothing higher to the east until the Urals, nature's border between Russia and Europe. | |||||||||||||||||
| And to the west, the brooding Black Mountains of Wales and the flatlands of the Marches offer one of the greatest views in the world from the Ross-on-Wye to Hereford road (A49) as you round the bend just after leaving Much Birch. | |||||||||||||||||
